The last part of the bad news, you will have to put in the time to make it happen. No matter what skill you will learn there is always a learning curve. The good news is that anyone who get organized, makes a plan, dedicates time to learn and follows what the experts are doing, can have success.

If you can live with that, you are on your way.

Planning Will Help You Get On The Right Path!

Step #1 Planning

No matter what you set out to do you do in life, it takes planning. For an online business this involves your business idea and how that idea benefits or solves a problem for others. Many of us start out thinking about making money online, that will come. Your business should be based on something you have experience doing, an interest in or a passion for, and most importantly how it can benefit others, or solve a problem for others.

Set goals. I know some people have an issue with this because of the unknown. How long will it take to get a business idea, or how long before you get a website up, or how long will it take to start earning money.

In reality no one knows the exact time it will take to do all of the steps needed. Some will do it faster than others, some have more experience, while other people have no experience.  Make a plan that suits the amount of time you have to devote to your business. The important part is that you devote an set amount of time weekly. Write this down and try to follow it. You may finish some tasks sooner than you have planned for or some tasks may take longer than planned.

From learning to play fingerstyle guitar I have learned to give myself plenty of time to accomplish my goals. I first must learn what I need to know then put it to practice. A simple goal setting plan might be:

  • Business idea  1st week
  • Keyword research 2nd  week
  • Learn and develop landing pages 3rd & 4th week
  • Create content 4th & 5th week

That is simple, but a plan to follow. Keep it realistic and obtainable. Move to the next step when you have this step completed.

Research Is The key To Your Success

Step #1a Research

Most people don’t like the thoughts of doing  research, mainly because most people don’t think they know how to do research properly. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

There are four areas you should think about to narrow down what business and what aspect of that business you can focus on.

  • Your Interests : Make a list of all of your interests, what you have a passion for and what experiences you have.
  • What you need to learn: Of the interests, passions and experiences, what don’t you know that you would like to.
  • Your skills: What skills you have for the list of your interests.
  • Research now: What are you learning now that gives you more experience for your interests.

By doing this little research task for yourself you can really narrow down the business idea. In many cases, what you find out you don’t know, can be your path to helping others as well. This is an area I work on and am getting better at. We all have areas where we can improve. Move to the next step once you have completed this step.

Do What Your Competitors Are Doing, But Do It Better!

Step #1b Competition

Researching your competitors is an essential part of your overall research and will set you up for narrowing down finding your keywords,  the design of your landing pages and the content you will offer.

Your competition is online and showing off their strategy to anyone who wants to look. Once you have your business idea, and the niche you want to pursue, you then need to see what your competition is doing and how successful they are. After all, these are the people you are competing with, so you will want to do a better job than they do.

Once you have zoned in on a business idea it’s time to do competition research. Try to find sites, on the first page SERPs pages, (Search Engine Results Page),  that are “landing pages”. These are short pages with little or no ads but contain a catchy headline and  with a lure to buy or try a product and service. They will have a call to action button or link like, “click here to get your free trial”, or “enter your email to get free information”.

Keep a record of the sites you have visited and how they are presenting their information. Sites are listed on the first page for a reason, and one big reason is the content they present. Many people believe that they have to collect emails and then bombard their email list with enticements to buy something. Google likes content.  In real estate it’s location, location, location, and on Google it’s content, content, content. That’s how you will make your mark online.

You may not be able to compete with these sites directly but they will give you ideas for niches that may get you listed for lower competition keywords. Some of these sites may be selling products and services that align with your business idea and you should take note of that. Take note of what each site is doing online to get ranked on the first page of SERPs, and do it better.

SemRush offers a free account, with a nice dashboard with lots of options, where you can do research on your competition. The free account is limited but will get you started.

Find A Niche With Low Competition

Step #1c Keywords

A niche is a an area of an idea that has been narrowed down to a specific concept of your idea. For example if your business idea is mountain biking, a niche of that general idea may be safety on biking trails or tire repair while off roading.

This step will give you some ideas on what subject you can create content for that has low competition online and may be a topic you can compete for a good listing on SERPs.

Keywords are words, phrases or long tail keywords that people are searching for on a regular basis online. This is an extremely important part of claiming your spot online.

There are tools online that will help you do that. Many companies online offer a service with monthly rates. They can be expensive but there are alternatives to help you along.

Keywords Everywhere is an online “Freeium” tool that will give you thousands of keyword ideas. It’s free to use it but to get the essential search data, for a low cost, you will have to purchase credits. It is a Chrome extension downloaded onto your computer. Once installed it will show you the search terms and data, right on the SERPs page, if you have purchased credits. Otherwise with the free version, you only see the keywords and phrases only, no data. But that does give you plenty of keyword ideas.

For $50 you get 500,000 search queries plus if you sign up through me you will get an additional 100,000 searches for a total of 600,000 searches. You can turn off the extension when not using it so you don’t use credits. No monthly fees, and you have complete control using it only when you need to.

They also provide great how to tutorial videos on how to use the tool and how to get the most out of you investment.

In Conclusion

It is very important to do all of the steps listed before you go ahead and start designing your site or landing page.

Give yourself plenty of time to complete the steps to get you started on the right path.
