Kumiko – Japanese Woodworking – Shoji

My latest passion, Kumiko. It is Japanese woodworking, believed to be approximately 1200 years old, but probably older than that.

It was first used by Japanese artisans for the elite to develop Shoji interior screens, window coverings and doors. 

Since Shoji means “to block light”, Shoji screens, window and door Kumiko were usually covered on the back with a translucent paper, (washi paper), that only allows a reduced amount of light. As time passed Shoji  was introduced into traditional Japanese homes
