Your Home Business
The Truth About Your Home Business
I'm Not Trying To Sell You Anything!
I know you have heard this before. Do I have affiliate links on my site, absolutely. If you find a product or service on my site that benefits you, then great. And if you click on a link and earn me a commission then thank you in advance. I use affiliate marketing and web development to supplement my income.
What I want to do is to help you avoid the “Distracting Rabbit Hole” and get you to take the “Focused Rabbit Hole”. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between the two. You can avoid the distracting rabbit hole by simply focusing.
For example my business is website development and content marketing using affiliate programs to supplement my income. For website development is use Kadence web development tools. After researching all of the options out there for tools and learning this is the system I use. As well I write content, not only for myself but for others as well. For information on content development I use SEMRush. Like Kadence they offer a number of free resources that have really helped me. I found these both through research and saw links online to these providers. I chose to follow those links because they had something that I was looking for to enhance my business.
Along the way in my research I saw hundreds of “Distracting Rabbit Hole” links like “Click here to find out how to make a thousand dollars a day!” Finally now I can avoid those links and focus on finding information and resources to help my business. I spend years doing the exact opposite.
Most Of Us Have Been Down The "Distracting Rabbit Hole"
If you are still reading this then you are probably like me, and have been online for years trying to make money, or trying to excellerate your online business. And like me you probably have been sucked down the “distracting rabbit hole” too!
If you are not sure of what I mean then ask yourself these questions:
Do I jump from one opportunity to another?
Do I get distracted doing research by links, banners, images?
Have I spent more money buying opportunities than I have earned?
Does my excitement only last a short time?.
Do I think all online opportunities are just scam?
There's no shame in admitting your shortcomings, in fact it is quite liberating to face them head on.
Don't Believe Everything You Think
This is where the “Paradigm Shift” in thinking collides with the “Rabbit Hole” way of thinking.
The best way I can sum up my take on a paradigm shift in thinking is “there are two sides to every story”. We make snap judgements and decisions, most of the time fueled by emotions. In just about every situation in life there are two sides to every interaction we have on a daily basis.
The Internet is definitely the number one choice for information gathering, and for home business opportunities. Marketers selling opportunities, courses and information work on our emotions and design their landing pages, ads and/or web sites accordingly. Ironically I also think targeting emotions is key, but the appropriate emotions is the the real path to success. When I say success people’s first thoughts go to the ATM machine. We all want more money, but the key is to have money and live a contented life.
There Is No Free Ride
Don’t you hate it when people tell you that. At one time you could do a lot a for free online, those days are gone. Sorry, I hate to break that news but it’s true. If you are trying to start any business, whether it’s a bricks and mortar or online business you will need to spend money. I use to hate hearing that too, but it’s a fact.
The fact is you don’t have to put out too much money to get started. For example you will need to go online with your own website. The first thing you need is a domain name. You can expect to spend around $15 which is good for a year. I get my domain names at Name Cheap.
Next you will need to find web hosting and you can’t have a live website without web hosting. I pay $88 for a three year contract, to host multiple sites I might add, that works out to be around $2.40 per month. I get my hosting through HostMetro.
Of course you will need a website. You can get a free theme and child starter templates for free. You can build a smaller site with these no problem. If you need more then you can purchase one of their bundles like I did. You also get a lot of free training if you are not familiar with using the latest WordPress blocks or plugins to make yourself a nice looking site. I use Kadence, they simply have the best theme packages online today.
Time To Focus!
Time to focus! You have read what I had to say above and you are not deterred at all, you are ready to go. Time to get your ducks lined up.
You are ready to start your business, whether it’s a bricks and mortar or an online business, you need to zero in on your business idea.
Of course there are millions of business ideas, and if you don’t really know what business you would like to start, then you need to do a brain storming. This is the question I ask myself when looking for a business idea. “I want to do something that benefits others, so what do I know, have a passion for or have experience in that I could offer to others?”
Everyone has a passion for something, something that get them excited or experience from a career or hobby. That is where you are going to find your business idea.
Once you have your idea then you will need to do some research so that you go in knowing the pros and cons.
After The Idea
I can’t emphasize enough the need to do your research. You need to know all the pros and con, from every angle. Listen to what the experts, whatever industry you go into, have to say. You may hear things you don’t want to hear but try not to get discouraged, since hard work in the right direction will pay off. As long as you believe it will happen, then it will. I understand this is easier for some than others, but everyday I hear a stories about someone who overcame any number of odds to get what they were dreaming of. It happens to people just like you and me!
Set obtainable goals such as, ‘I will have a business idea in a month’. If you achieve that sooner go to your second goal such as, ‘Have a business plan in a month’, then ‘Do research on and register a domain name’ in a week, and so on. Write down all of your goals until you open. If you are wondering about monetary goals I tend to think you will make what you make depending on your diligence in preparing and executing your plan. Once you have a sales history you can then project future earnings.
It’s time to set a business plan and follow it. I know, when a business plan is mentioned most people cringe, but it is essential. To get an idea of what your business plan should look like check out the 500+ free sample business plans from bplan.com
